Assignments
This page will not include information about every single assignment, so students should continue to record assignment entries in planners and refer to planners for information about assignments and due dates, and parents should review student planners on a regular basis. For suggestions about how to use a planner as a planning and goal-setting tool, you can find a summary of the onTRAC system here: http://premier.ca/value-planning/ontrac-planning-process. You can read articles called "Homework Tips" and "Homework Help" in the "Educational Reading" section under "Plans and Schedules" above. You can also see another perspective about homework here: https://www.alfiekohn.org/article/truth-homework/. As with many issues, I will balance these points of view in the approach that I will take with homework this year. I think it's a good idea for students to spend some time (approximately 30 minutes) reading every day, and this can include a regular review of notes and handouts from class. I also think it is a good form of learning to describe (in summary) what one did and learned at school to another person on a regular basis (e.g., you might ask your son or daughter to describe the day's activities or the week's key ideas).

This week, we are watching the movie Hidden Figures and discussing it in small groups (asking questions, making connections, summarizing the parts of the story, and investigating the historical context).
The biggest assignment this month has been creating an infographic about the global village. These are some videos that we watched to support our learning. It is important to give credit to David J. Smith, the author of If the World Were a Village, since we used the information in his book

Since I am using Google Classroom (link below) so much this year, I haven't been posting as much on this page. However, with the end of the first term approaching, I wanted to make a list of some of the assignments that students have worked on this term (I have also created a checklist of learning tasks and assignments: https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vRacFjllBwYNtrtfZ31Ze3agLukJzFC5N3Tp78hnvWF15nYtf-21i0srWVYusGVj-Ygh2BGKh5-CIaL/pub):
- Power Poem (I added these to http://mcleodprojects.weebly.com/home/pandemic-power-poems-20202021; password: stingers),
- The Secret Path timeline assignment (I provided feedback in Google Classroom),
- Scientific Method assignment (I provided feedback in Google Classroom),
- Friendly letter to me (I responded, either in an e-mail or in Google Classroom),
- Learning about the BC election and government and analyzing the election results,
- Writing assignment about the voting age (I am working on assessing these),
- A paragraph summarizing an article about the Black Lives Matter movement (I'm hoping students will finish this by Friday),
- A "cause and effect" assignment analyzing advertisements (this was due on Monday),
- Reading about the universe and the solar system in Newsela and World Book and answering questions about it (we are working on this assignment),
- French questions and answers (I am assessing students abilities this week),
- "Comment ça va?" wheel (I have returned these to students with feedback),
- A "Story Grammar" (showing an understanding of French culture) about the video The Sweater: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZyDsF-Gp3o (I am hoping that students will finish this by Friday), and
- Math worksheets and assignments on Mathletics (ongoing).

You can find many assignments in our Google Classroom space: https://classroom.google.com/c/MTQwNzAwOTYzMjIw?cjc=jfoazil (students will have to be logged in to their [email protected] Google account to be able to access Google Classroom).
Today, students started on an assignment that involved responding to The Secret Path (https://secretpath.ca/), which we watched last week, by ordering events from the story on a timeline.
Previous assignments in Google Classroom involved writing a friendly letter to me (perhaps using http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/student-interactives/letter-generator-30005.html), creating a Lucidpress account and using that platform to create a Power Poem, using our class code - yya1795 - to access Epic Digital Library, and taking a reading assessment at https://readtheory.org/app/sign-up/create-account/student?classcode=WJHGGGBE.
